The L.I.G.H.T. Framework

“We don’t just teach the game—we shape lives.” – Coach TJ Rosene

This framework helps you coach beyond the scoreboard and into players’ lives. Each pillar includes a reflection to guide your mindset and a ready-to-use resource you can apply right away.

L – Lead with Vision

See beyond the season.

Help your team play for something greater than trophies—create a shared purpose that drives unity and meaning.

I – Invest in Relationships

Trust before tactics.

Your players need to be known, seen, and valued. Take time to learn their stories—and lead from connection.

G – Grow Character Daily

Coach the person, not just the player.

Use the game to shape who your players become—build discipline, humility, and resilience in every drill and decision.

H – Hold to Standards, Not Just Rules

Culture is built by what you expect and what you allow.

Co-create standards that define your team’s identity, and hold to them with consistency and love.

T – Teach for Life

Every moment is a life lesson.

Coaching isn’t just about skills—it’s about shaping leaders, communicators, and confident young people.

How & When to Use the L.I.G.H.T. Framework During the Season

Coaching with purpose doesn’t require overhauling your schedule. It just requires small, consistent moments of reflection and intention.

Here’s a practical guide for integrating the Compass across a full season:

Pre-Season: Set the Foundation

Key Focus: Vision, Culture & Relationships

L – Lead with Vision

Use during your first 1–2 practices.

Have your team complete the “Why We Play” vision builder. Use it to print a vision banner for your locker room.

H – Hold to Standards

Use during your first 1–2 practices.

Run the “Standards Before Strategy” workshop to align on behaviors that define your team. Reinforce these from Day 1.

I – Invest in Relationships

Start in week one.

Have your players complete their Player Profiles and meet with them 1-on-1 to discuss. Set up your weekly 1-on-1 rhythm—even if it’s just 5 minutes per player every two to four weeks. Set reminders or use a spreadsheet to track.

Early Season: Build Identity & Trust

Key Focus: Relationship Building & Character

I – Invest in Relationships

Continue your regular 1-on-1s. Consider walking laps during warm-up or sending a personal message each week.

G – Grow Character Daily

Introduce the Character Challenge of the Week at your Monday practice or post-game. Keep it visible in the locker room and on any digital team apps.

Mid-Season: Reset, Reconnect, Refocus

Key Focus: Reinforcing Vision, Culture, and Life Lessons

L – Lead with Vision

Revisit your “Why We Play” banner mid-season—invite your team to add examples of how they’ve lived it out.

H – Hold to Standards

Mid-season check-in: Are we slipping on any standards? Rerun the team workshop if energy or accountability has dipped.

T – Teach for Life

Start sprinkling in Team Talk Starters or Monday Mindset Prompts—bus rides, film sessions, or downtime are great opportunities.

Post-Season: Reflect & Celebrate Legacy

Key Focus: Reflection, Growth & Lifelong Lessons

T – Teach for Life

Use the Team Talk Starters for end-of-season conversations. Ask: “What did you learn this year that has nothing to do with basketball?”

L – Lead with Vision

Invite players to write a “Letter to Next Year’s Team” based on your shared vision.

G – Grow Character Daily

Celebrate each player’s growth with a character award or personal note.

Pro Tips for Implementation

Print the Compass Reflections and keep them in your clipboard, locker room, or on your practice plan template.

Choose 1 letter to focus on per week or month. For example, run a “Character Month” in January or a “Teach for Life” week during playoffs.

Ask your captains to lead the reflections before practice or games—peer-to-peer leadership reinforces culture.

Make it visible: Turn the L.I.G.H.T. acronym into a poster, slide, or screen saver.

Return to the Compass Often

This page is here anytime you need it—whether you’re planning practice, facing a tough moment with a player, or simply needing a reminder of your purpose.

Come back to reflect. Come back to reset. Come back to keep being a light.
