PGC’s TJ Rosene shared this bit of knowledge on a recent Hardwood Hustle Basketball Podcast.

How do you instruct your teammates to be better? Most of the time when you do it, it is harmful to your team. 2 out of every 100 players like to be told what to do. It is bad enough to have a coach constantly telling you what to do, then you have teammates doing it as well.

Instruct before a mistake is made

Reminders are only useful when given before hand.

Don’t be the player who yells at a teammate to get a hand up after a shooter has already taken (and made) an uncontested show. Be the teammate that yells out “Shooter” before that player even catches the ball.

Don’t be the teammate who yells are other players to block out after giving up an offensive rebound on a free-throw. Be the players that tells your teammates to block out before the free-throw is attempted.

Give reminders Early and Often. If and when you make a mistake, own up to it and fix next time.

If you are not smart enough or quick enough to anticipate the need to instruct, you don’t have the right to say anything.

“Before OR not at all rule”. Make your instructions before the action, not after they happen because most instructions after a play are more detrimental than they are beneficial.
