read & react games approach

A new approach to a rock-solid offense

Teach and Implement the Read & React in Record Speed.

The Games Approach keeps players locked in, thinking on their feet, and mastering the Read & React faster than ever.

1. Learn the System

2. Teach with Games

3. Play with Flow

what if practice felt like game day...

… IMAGINE THIS: YOU HUDDLE YOUR TEAM AND SAY, “Today we’re learning the Read & React. Do you want to run drills—or play games?”

Every player says, “Play games, Coach.”

Now picture this:

  • They’re fired up.
  • They’re competing.
  • They’re learning the offense faster than ever.

Why?

Today’s players crave action, not drills. They want fun, feedback, and the freedom to play.

Not sure how to get there?

That’s exactly what the Read & React Games Approach was built for.

the Read & React Games Approach

Back-to-back D1 National Championship Games, 3 consecutive High School State Championships, D2 Division Championship, International Recognition…

…the Read & React Offense has quite the record.

And it just became easier than ever to implement and train.

We built the Games Approach to create faster buy-in, deeper learning, and accelerated results…and what coach doesn’t want that?

“The Read & React Games Approach makes the game fun again! It provides in-game experience and in-game corrections through a constraints-based methodology designed to hold the attention span of today's youth and their yearning for instant gratification. It gives them the excitement of game play while breaking down specific areas of the offense, all while allowing them to learn through their mistakes. The best part is coaching the skills and actions in real-time, at game speed. Blow your whistle less and enjoy watching your team learn again!”
Colin Lester
MS Boys Basketball
"The Read & React Games Approach helps develop the decision-making skills of players much quicker than the traditional linear method. Players can work on basic skills and strategies in a fun environment that promotes active learning."
Ray Counter
Coach
“This is the most impactful and engaging way to install the Read and React Offence. Players not only enjoy the games-based learning process, but understand the why behind the what, and therefore the time it takes to learn the Read and React is expedited with much greater player retention. Training time is maximized because you can easily skill stack and there isn't a marked transition from drills to play. It's a win-win: both players and coaches love it!”

This method will help you teach the Read & React Offense that has helped thousands of programs score more points, win more games, hang banners, and have recording-breaking seasons

But what is the Read & React?

Read & React Offense

Play in a way that none of your opponents are prepared for by teaching your players ‘how to play’ instead of just how to run plays.

Read & REact—utilized at all levels—from youth teams to NCAA powerhouses like Iowa, who made back-to-back Final Four appearances.

"I have enjoyed learning about the Read & React offense and incorporating it into my offensive system. The Read & React teaches players how to play the game instead of making robotic actions that are predetermined. It is a fun offense that allows players to showcase their abilities!”
Lisa Bluder
2x Final Four Coach
“What our staff loves about the Read & React is that, when implemented well, it is hard to guard.

MEET READ & REACT CREATOR, COACH RICK TORBETT

With over 40 years of coaching and studying the game, Rick Torbett has dedicated his life to understanding basketball at its deepest levels. That journey led to the creation of the Read & React Offense—his signature system that revolutionized the game by introducing the concept of positionless basketball.

Rick’s innovative approach hasn’t just changed how teams play—it’s changed how coaches coach. His system has been adopted by programs in over 30 countries, and he’s had the privilege of mentoring thousands of coaches at every level, from youth leagues to professional teams.

What drives him? A relentless passion for helping coaches unlock their full potential—so they can develop smarter players, build stronger programs, and lead with confidence on and off the court.

MEET COACH Nelson Handel, Read & React Games Appraoch Creator

Coach Nelson Handel, a founding member of PGC Coaching and a lifetime member of Better Basketball, has been running the Read & React Offense for over 12 years with middle and high school teams. During that time, he developed and adapted the small sided games and coaching techniques found in the Games Approach course.

After a couple of years traveling the globe, consulting with programs in multiple countries and mentoring coaches, Coach Nelson began a residency at Club Joventut Badalona (a.k.a. “La Penya”) in Barcelona, Spain, where he coaches two girls U18 teams.

Before leaving the States, he was Director of Basketball and Boys Varsity Head Coach at Larchmont Charter High School. During his five-year tenure, his Boys Varsity teams won three League Championships and made final four in two Los Angeles City Championships. The program was promoted two divisions, becoming one of only two schools with less than 2000 students to be ranked in Division 3.

[FAQs] Still Have Questions?

To get the most out of this product, we recommend grabbing the full Read & React offensive system as well. The Games Approach is designed to build on Read & React concepts and helps players apply them through guided games that deepen understanding and execution.

The Read & React Games Approach is a coaching resource that teaches the Read & React offense through small-sided, competitive games—rather than traditional drills. It helps players learn by doing, making the offense stick faster and transfer more effectively to live play.

Instead of isolating actions in drill format, the Games Approach immerses players in game-like situations where they must read, react, and make decisions in real time. This accelerates learning, improves basketball IQ, and increases player engagement.

You’ll get a library of guided games designed to build every layer of the Read & React system. Each game includes clear instructions, coaching points, progressions, and video demonstrations so you can implement them immediately in your practices.

Absolutely. The Games Approach scales well for different ages and skill levels. It’s especially powerful for high school coaches who want better transfer from practice to games—and for youth coaches looking to simplify teaching without sacrificing depth.
